I recieved ten celestial pearl danios about a month ago and put them in my 180 gallon paludarium. Its half land, half water. The water section is about 3.5 ft long by about 2.5 ft wide and 8 inches deep. When I ordered them I knew they were small, but I had no idea how shy they were. Well, I didn’t see them for a long time. I’d catch a glimpse of a few for a second, then they’d see me and swim to another corner. Well, they are finally coming out more, getting used to captivity. But, they are still lost in this aquarium and I think they have trouble finding food, despite being the only inhabitants, because I have lost a few. I only have five left. I think the last five would do better in a smaller aquarium, plus I’d love to be able to see them better. The only spare I have is a 2.5 gallon. Would this be too small, if so I’ll leave them where they are.

i would say it was to small.

how long have you had them?
    is the water heated?
    any plants?
    what do you feed them?

mine (seems most the users on here are the same) were shy. mine have been really friendly recently. i have redone my tank and lost about 4/5th of the plants they all seem to be out in the open swimming about. if i move or put my head ot the tank they will stay there and a few come towards me now!

it take a little time as they have hardly been in contact with other humans!

I agree the tank is really a bit big for only 5 cpd’s, they will indeed struggle to find food and would appreciate the smaller tank, you will find it easier to provide shelter and decent feeding in the smaller tank..Oh yeah welcome to the site

I think the big tank is too big, and the 2.5 too small. A five gallon would be the smallest I’d figure these guys would be happy in.

On the other hand, cramped in a 5gal might be better than starving in a huge tank! Mine move around a lot, but don’t seem to move very *far* in my moss-choked 10 gallon tank. Personally, I’d give the 2.5 gal a go until a more ideal size is available.

    Keep us posted.

I agree, just make sure you keep on top of the water changes in such a small tank. Luckily a couple of litres a day is possible in a small tank and the fish will thrive, they are an ideal size for nano tanks. Maintainence should take no longer that 10 minutes daily.. Goodluck.
