Hi all, iv expanded slightly and thought id show you around the fishroom.
This water butt holds preheated water for water changes(130litres)
View from the larger side.
Breeding tanks 10 – 18x12x12 and 5 – 16x8x8
Filters for the breeding tanks are run from this Pond airpump,it is more than capable.
This is whats known as organised Chaos…..
Tanks are lit by one cheap 5ft flouresent tube, i am not happy with the colour it produces and may swap it for a better one…
The door is my next job,it need replacing and insulating.
Next to the door is this new rack, holding 3 18x18x12 tanks and eventually 6 – 18x18x12
Grow out area, run from a separate airpump and home made sponge filters.
This 100litre tank will be replaced with another large rack and 12 more 18x12x12 tanks when finances allow.

September 26, 2007 at 11:08 pm #12348L777ParticipantCouldn’t agree more! Amazing setup — we’re impressed! Do you keep the heated refill tank aerated also? How do you handle draining the tanks (simultaneous to refill, or lower then raise the water level in each), and avoiding cross contamination with water changes?
September 26, 2007 at 11:45 pm #12349ste12000ParticipantThanks…No its not aerated, i dont find it makes much difference, upto now each tank is drained individually using a syphon pipe, it is then refilled by gravity from a pipe on the water butt, i prefere it this way, as you say there is less chance of cross contamination and if required tanks can have completely different water.
I have got maintainence down to around 1 hour if i dont mess about! but who has a fishroom and doesnt mess about, it usually takes more like 2-3 hours of messing to do all the little jobs, its been up and running now for only 7 weeks so there are loads of little jobs to do. I still have to insulate and board the roof of the side with the water butt, it can wait a week though as my missus is thinking of changing her name to guppy so she gets a bit of attention lol  :wink:September 27, 2007 at 6:49 pm #12353chr15_8Participantlooks great!
only bad thing i see is the airpump. im not a fan of blagdon airpums (from experience)
have been through 2 before (sent 1 back got a replacment) 2 within a bout 1 and a half years). the second one stated to get loud and started to drop in pressure before it made a noise with nothing coming out.
just warning you and hope i got 2 dodgy airpumps
what are you stand made out of and how?
chris
September 27, 2007 at 7:52 pm #12357ste12000ParticipantBlagdon are one of the most reliable airpumps around, from what you say about yours i would say the diaphram was either worn or broken, there is a service kit avalible and ill be servicing mine every year, upto now it is proving very reliable and very very quiet and powerful.
The stands are made with 2 1/2 x 3 planed Redwood it is screwed into position and corner braces are used on every join. It is very level and took the best part of a day to get right. It is untreated and will last at least 10 years, i did contemplate treating but most timber treatments are not fish safe and i didnt want the risk.September 27, 2007 at 11:37 pm #12361albatrossParticipantWow how i wish for a room like that Im GREEN…….with envy Could you do updates on this as im sure many on this forum would like to follow your progress
September 28, 2007 at 1:39 am #12362aquaholic85ParticipantLooks Awesome, question tho, where did you find those tanks? did you make them yourself? from what i can gather it looks like a large tank with permanet dividers.
Please let us know how to obtain these little tanks so we can get more fish!!
September 28, 2007 at 1:45 am #12363celestialdudeParticipantHey Ste12000 maybe when you have time someday you can show us how to make DIY sponge filters as well (only if you have spare time). And how you made those shelves too — closeups of the joinery and brackets and whatnot. Yeah it would be great to learn from the master fishroom maker!!
September 28, 2007 at 7:33 am #12367L168ParticipantMorning Ste,
What are your water perameters directly out of the tap, PH and hardness would be intresting to know. Do you use a Peat canon to soften it ?

No-one looked after my fish because i couldnt really find anyone i could trust 100%. Just checked and iv only lost 1 juvinile ram cichlid, so cannot complain.
Right some answers to your questions.Albatross, i will try and update as often as possible, Have you seen the first thread i posted on the start of the fishroom?http://celestialpearldanio.com/viewtopic.php?t=393
aquaholic85, i dont know about what tanks are sold in the US but these were bought from a local shop and are built by a large company called clearseal, they are all individual tanks, not one large with tank dividers. There are 10-18x12x12, 5-16x8x8, 6- 18x18x12 and the 100litre tank with the cabinate and hood, this is now for sale and i will use the money for another rack.
celestialdude, my man, i will be uploading some pics on how to make a sponge filter step by step, although after all the parts have been bought it does not work out much cheaper than buying one in the shops. It does have a very large surface area for bacteria at around 4×6 inch square.
L168 luckily my water straight from the tap is naturaly very soft and slightly acidic, Here is my water report from the local water authority copied and pasted..

are there any other unexpected fry since youve been back?

October 1, 2007 at 10:23 pm #12415ste12000ParticipantHi Chris hows your fish house coming on??? Any further along with your plans?
I have come back to the fishhouse and found around 5 CPD fry, this is puzzling me as there are tons of eggs not hatched so something is amiss, i put 3 pairs into 3 separate tanks with a mesh along the bottom so they could not eat them while i was away. I have returned to find 5 fry hatched and sitting on the bottom using up the yolk sac the rest of the eggs are slightly fungused and will not hatch, there are over 50 eggs like this. The water is very soft and acidic more suited to south American species which i tend to specialize in. It was also very warm at 82-84f.
I am going to seperate the males/females for a week or two and try again with slightly cooler water and after that with neutral or slightly alkaline water and experiment to see what the problem is.
I have also come back to another spawn from my young rams..http://celestialpearldanio.com/viewtopic.php?t=541
This is a large spawn for young fish consisting of around 250 eggs. I also put the corydoras Sterbai into a breeding tank on friday before i went and i found a few eggs on the glass when i returned, not many though so i dont know what happened to the rest as cory’s dont usually eat their own eggs, unless they got hungry after not being fed for nearly 3 days?? i found 3 eggs stuck to the glass and the least iv ever known them to lay was around 60.October 2, 2007 at 1:11 am #12422L777Participantste,
I’m sure you’ll work out the problem with the eggs not hatching. If it turns out to be a water parameter matter (too hot or too acidic), that will be interesting to add to the growing knowledge! Mine have all been hatching out over the last week or so in 80-82 degree (F) water. My tank is fully infested with java moss, so I haven’t been able to see any eggs or fresh-hatched but not yet free swimming fry — I only see them once they make it up to the few inches of free water at the top of the tank. Come to think of it, I haven’t counted more than 2 adults out of 6 at a time since moving them into their thicket either!Keep us posted as you figure out the trick to getting them swimming.
October 2, 2007 at 10:01 pm #12438chr15_8Participantcongrats with the eggs for the rams.
also as l777 will be good to try and find out the reason for the hatching rate being so low out of all those eggs. at least you can say you have breed them
my fish house
no idea yet my dad approves of the insulation but hasnt decided if i can have it yet so still waiting (dont want to be to pushy about it)
