new breeding tank *pics

Hey all, I’m a newbie here and with Celestial Pearl Danios. I’ve had cpds for a few months now. They’ve been waiting for me to get off my rear and set up some new digs for them.

So here’s the specs:

20 gal Long (30″x12″x12″) aquarium
Divided about 1/3 breeding area 2/3 open swim for the adult colony
fluval 2 internal filter (turned all the way down)
sponge filter on airline
several anubias coffefolias
javamoss “mat” I made for a spawning bed

11 cpds
I feed them spirulina flakes and pellets as well as crushed shrimp pellets. I’ve fed them crushed krill too.

Water temp is around 74-76F
I haven’t tested my water yet so no parameters available. They are in the same water they were in previous, only added tap water to fill the tank

Nice setup, Chadly … lots of good ideas there.

I need to do something similar. I’ve only been able to rescue 1 fry from my display tank (all others have been eaten) — he/she just recently joined the big boys/girls in the display tank and is doing very well.

Great set up, tank looks nice though I personally would put java moss into the breeding section.

To breed this fish all you really need is good quality water & java moss, even in a community tank you’ll get a few fry that way.

I have to agree with RCD you really need a big clump of Java moss. The moss will have a few uses, a hiding place for the adults, a place to lay the eggs and somewhere for the fry to hide.

You could probably take the divider out and spawn the fish in the main tank, although you probably won’t get as many fry due to predation by the parents. I have an 18″*12″*12″ with a big clump of java moss and constantly have fry,at the moment I have approx 8 very young fry and have altogether somewhere around 30 fry over the last 3 months. I have noticed that the number of fry from each spawn seems to be increasing. The fry tend to spend their time at the top of the tank whereas the adults will spend most of their time hiding under the moss.

Good luck with your breeding project, they are gorgeous little fish and really easy to keep. Once you start to spawn them they don’t seem to want to stop!

Ok thanks for the outlooks.

I changed the tank around a little bit. I removed everything on the right side and added some fake grassy plants to the entire bottom of the tank for a spawning bed. If I don’t see any fry or any breeding behavior then I’ll add java moss.

One thing I’m worried about is that I think I only have one female. I’ll prob get a couple more…
