Hey. Here are a few pics of the tank I bought for my CPD’s. It is a AquaOne Aqua Style 380 tank. It contains around 27 litres. Any suggestions on how I can improve it and get them to breed would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I’ve just been to my local fish shops but no-one stocks it and can’t seem to get it. An online purchase again me thinks. I bought some natural coloured silica Aquasand as i’ve read sand is the substrate where they are from. I’m guessing this will also help disguise eggs as the grains are of a similar size. I also bought a small n-ish shaped piece of bogwood. I’ll post some more pics up after i’ve made these changes. A trip to the 25 litre bucket for my CPD’s for a few hours I think.

Also, if your anacharis still has the plant weight around the base- take that off too, it will constrict the stems and possibly rot the base of the plant.
good luck with your fishies!June 4, 2007 at 11:24 pm #11329ste12000ParticipantHi guys, Jimbo where in cheshire are you. Im in Runcorn and have some moss.. Let me know if your interested… Nice tank.

I have some floating plants with long feathery roots which I bought so that fry would have somewhere to hide from their parents. This was unnecessary because I’ve never seen the parents chase the fry, and even when the parents do get near the fry, the fry don’t actually use the plant to hide in – unlike their parents, the fry don’t want to stick too close to plants.
I have some tall leafy plants that I thought the fry might use, again to hide in. Again, they don’t seem to try to “stick close” to the plants and I think this was unnecessary.
I have a low bushy plant. The adults LOVE this because they hide behind it and I never see them except at feeding time. I think that -anything- you put in the tank that they can hide behind is probably something the adults will like (bogwood, plant vase, etc.). As far as I know, it probably doesn’t actually help breeding except that fish that can hide might be less stressed and breed better.
On the surface, I have both a kind of grass I bought in a wire mesh from my LFS, as well as lots of Java Moss. The adults have a definite preference for spawning over the Java Moss, and I’ve rarely seen then spawn over the grass.
My recommendations for an ideal tank therefore would be: lots of java moss, and maybe one taller plant, or large object for the adults to hide behind.

Don’t think they’d spawn there at all, but they’re good space fillers for those waiting for their underwater jungle to grow.
Also, my galaxies like dips in the sand level under a patch of java moss or some other plants where they can rest or circle each other.
