Just a quick post to let you all know I’ve just seen my first fry! Only three that I can see and they are tiny! I’ll post my tank stats later as I’m about to go out.

There’s no airation in the tank but the fluval 2+ sends quite a strong stream of current diagonally across the tank. The temp is 24C. Unfortunately I’ve been away for a couple of days and can only find two of the fry! I’ll go and get a better breeding net tomorrow for the remaining fry.

Well, I got the net breeder trap and an extra fine net to catch the babies in, unfortunately I’m down to one lonely little baby. Can’t find the others anywhere and I’m begining to think they may have got sucked into the filter. BUt at least I know they will breed for me, so everythings crossed for more fry.

Tan, be patient! oh, and don’t look in the plants for the fry as I spotted mine at the surface about 1/4 – 1/2 inch below the surface, and they’re tricky little buggers to see!
    Good luck.

aah! my guppy fry always go to the surface first then after a few hours if i havent spotted them and scooped them out they dive down to the plants to hide at which point i cant net them :( so they have to fend for themselves…which they usually manage! if they’re fast enough to dodge my net they’re fast enough to dodge the big hungry fish!
i have some floating plants in the galaxy tank and they’re about 1-3 inches from the top. so maybe they’ll use that. not too concerned about the fry surviving in there as the galaxies are always at the bottom and dont even come to the middle let alone the top, so i’m confident any fry will survive from being gobbled so long as they get to the upper part of the tank and dont get gobbled on the way there. oh when will it be my turn! everyone else finds this breeding lark so easy! :?
if you’ve had them breed once i’m sure you’ll get more and you’ll be better prepared for next time!

I have LOTS of fry now, and I only ever notice them when they are at the top of the tank, and I suspect they swim to the top fairly soon after hatching. (Which is why some of the posts about syphoning water off the top make me nervous.)

The fry swim about at the top of the tank, and don’t seem to be too bothered about swimming in the roots of some floating plants I have. They seem to be very brave and don’t need to hide from their parents as they parents always stay on the bottom of the tank, and don’t seem to be remotely interested in eating their young.

The older fry that are bigger are now about 2 months old, and they now spend some time down lower with their parents, as they are now too big to be accidentally eaten.

Yippee! Found all 4 of the original fry and I think I’ve just spotted another, but can’t catch the little devil! What a relief. How long will I be able to keep them in the breeder net for before they get too big? I know I could just release them back into the tank, but this way I can keep an eye on their progress and numbers. Once I’ve grown 10 or so out to adult hood, I’ll let them get on with it and won’t bother to move to breeding nets.
zzyzx: how big are they at 2 months?

    well done

i would say you could leave the 5 for a month maybe 2 months in the breeder net (the net is about 4x4x4 isint it?)

if not could you not get a clearseal glass tank? my local has them for just over £10 but then you have to get an air pump/filter unless you have an air pump you can use/t off to run a air filter?

Not a bad idea chr15-8. The other option would be to put all the adult cpd’s in the same tank and use the other 15 g for the fry. Do you think 15 uk G would be okay for 17 adults, seeing as there won’t be any other fish in there?
