had to kill no.1 this evening

was at the surface jumping for about 10 seconds the lay flat (on its side) and started to swim round in circles really fast (havent seen my cpds move so fast) do it for about to mins and stopped and just layed on its side then it started to jump again! it stopped for about a minite and starting to breath really hard and shaking so i out it in a bowl (quickest thing to get) caught it put it in the for 10 mins with an airstone and towel over to make it dark and was shaking even more.

so i made the decision to kill it (was the hardest thing ive done in a long time)

on a good note no2 is alive still and seems to have recoved. been doing water changes every other day replacing lost salt. will keep him in there for another week and will slowly reduce the salt level to normall again.

i think both illness’ have been caused by water quailty when i went alway due to excess feeding

on a good note i found a fry (first one since i got back!)

Im going away at the end of september, only for four days for a long weekend. I am dreading leaving anyone in charge of my fishroom, if my fish were large adults i would not bother feeding them at all but as i have young fry someone is going to have to come in  .
My mother in law lives two minutes away but she struggles to keep guppies never mind feed and check on baby Apistogramma and other delicate dwarfs. I think i will ask my mum who is a bit better at keeping her fish alive lol  .
By the way most of my family now keep fish thanks to me, my mum has a 100litre community and is still determined to get her kribs to breed,my sister took some advice and now has two tanks and enjoys her guppies, my young(15) cousin saw my tanks and went mad on keeping fish, he nagged his dad and now owns two community tanks. And my mother-in-law keeps danios and tetras in a 2ft community tank.

Thinking about it i should have plenty of fish sitters! … But can they be trusted….???????????

    Hi,

If its only 4 days id feed them BBS till you can see thier orange stomach and then go without having someone look after them. I do this and have little trouble even for 7 – 10 days. This way will be the best way. I onloy left someone once looking after my tank and came back to a very smelly and dirty tank with only bristelnoses left alive the rest of the tabkmates were dead.

mine were left around 3 weeks so no chance leaving them plus as what ste said i have nanies who need to be feed daily

oh well no more long holidays for me if i get my fish house.

and its not like you can just call someone up to fish sit/feed

As i am going at the end of september i have 1 month to experiment. I might do a 50% water change tomorrow with a big feed in the morning and not feed for four days :?  …
I cannot see myself having the willpower to be sat in the fishroom and not feed them at all  .
if it works and they come through fine i think that would be the way to go. Cheers lads.

Maybe put an add in the paper. “experienced fish caretaker wanted.” Of course you’d have to pay them, and probably should ask a few important questions to judge their ability at raising fish and fish first aid.

There are people that could look after them out there. They just aren’t running “Fish Kennels”

I’m leaving next spring for 2 or 3 monthes and don’t trust my family with my babies so I’ll definately be finding someone that knows fish. My family appreciates their beauty, but is clueless when it comes to taking care of them.

seriously though in the Uk i do not think there would be many people willing to hand over their housekeys to a complete stranger while away for two weeks.

Leave the keys to a trusted neighbor. Have them let person in to deal with the fish. Dunno.

Yeah, I guess we’re pretty trusting over here.

Another idea I just had was if there were such things as fish clubs where people know each other they could look volunteer looking after fish for each other.

Oh, all these far out ideas… Must be Friday! :D
