They must take up a whole lotta tank space eh. Did ya breed and raise those?
They are a very prolific species. I have two 4ft tanks full of young praecox although some will be gone soon.
There are some here (with young platys & galaxys)
The adult male
That’s a nice male !

I don’t know, but the connection I make is…there’s both shiny! And like most females, I like shiny!

October 24, 2007 at 12:08 am #12737atlantis_childParticipantGot it!!!
Aurora is a Melanotaenia splendida australis! Noted as peaceful to it’s own kind, and other other fisk. Good community inhabitant.
Happy to finally figure it out! Thank you Google.

Haven’t tried, but I’m 99% sure. Mine doesn’t bother anyone, exept occasionally his “girlfriend,” Indy, and my betta, Aquila, when he starts flirting with her too much.

January 6, 2008 at 3:52 am #13281misterchengmouaParticipantwell. the first one is a Melanotaenia spenldida sp.. the second one – hybrid. with rainbows, you have to be very careful that you get them from a reputable seller. there are tons-i mean TONS of hybrids out there- mainly from those fish farms out there that doesnt know anything about fish. it is so easy for ‘bows to cross breed. people buy them and throw them into the same tank and because they are so easy to breed, the owner doesnt have to do much to get fry. if they are lucky enough to get them to grow up enough, they sell em to their LFS under some name and because not all LFS owners know rainbowfish, they take it as a real ‘bow. there are too many hybrids out there!!!
rainbowfish come from OZ and NG and its almost impossible to get them imported and a lot of them are endangered or already extinct in their natural habitats. we dont need anymore crappy hybrids!!!
sorry about all of that up there-i just get really into it…
the main fish species that i keep are rainbows and i make sure that i get all of mine from legit breeders.January 7, 2008 at 12:23 am #13295atlantis_childParticipantI’ll take your word for it, misterchengmoua, you seem to know you’re stuff.
I’ve been contemplating ‘donating them to the fish store I work at. They’re either be placed in our large display tank or sold cheap. When I bought the rainbowfish I hadn’t researched properly. Later found out rainbows are shoaling and need a bigger aquarium.
My tank isn’t exactly rainbowfish habitat-ish either. Slate with short plants.
It’s not that I don’t like them, I do. It’s just I feel bad keeping them in an inappropiate environment.
If I brought them in I’d be able to oversee what happens to them, as I’m the main fishroom girl on weekdays.
What’s your opinion?

Just wanted to add that I also keep M. praecox -
