I am just thinking about setting up a tank for these fish. In the meantime, I could keep them in an existing 10 gallon tank that I use for breeding guppies (the guppies can be retired to another, larger tank).

I was thinking 10 gallon as a breeding tank and maybe 8 fish with two males and six females and lots of java fern. Is that too small or too few fish for breeding purposes?

Just a newbie in Mississauga, Canada here (a suburb of Toronto) :?:

These are small fishes, so 8 in a 10-gallon will be more than fine.

I’ve been able to breed 4 in a 5-gallon. Took about 2 months for it to happen though.

Your setup sounds just about right… have lots of java moss and you’ll set the mood.

Good luck! I am in Toronto too. Where did you get your stock?

I think that should be fine. Definately not too few or too small. Java moss is good to use too. Sandy bottom more natural to these fish.

I don’t have my fish, yet. I thought I’d get my tank setup and do a proper cycling. I will use and existing tank modified for the CPDs and move the guppies into the new tank.

I have emails out to lucky aquarium in Newmarket and Menagerie downtown on Parliament. I have a feeling that my search might take a while but I’m patient. I’m amazed at how little information there is on these little beauties. However, they are amazing looking.

Do you know of any reputable (i.e.locally bred and reasonably priced) breeders in our area?

Well, I got mine from Lucky Aquarium at Market Village / Pacific Mall (Steeles & Kennedy N.E.) but I haven’t seen them stocked since then.
