Since I do not see any introduction thread and have a question about CPD I just do that here.

How long TYPICALLY(I’m sure temperature, feeding , water change., etc influence the growth just like any other fish) does it take the newly free swimming CPD frys to get tp the point that they become look like a CPD? :

The reason I ask you this, here is my situation.
I bought 2 CPD, hoping to get a pair middle of last month. And I told the fish catching woman to catch me a pair. Of course she asked me how can I tell? So I told her that the female is less colorful and male have kind of humpy looking.
And of course, they turned out to be 2 females.
So I bought another 2 from different store at the end of last month. And told him to catch 2 males. Of course, I told him the way to sex them. And he actually caught 2 males.
However, one morning I found 1 of the male is dead. And since then, I suspecct the males can be territorial. Because I saw the 2 males chasing(probably the stronger one was chasing weaker one) constantly after I put them in the tank from the store bag. At the time I had no idea so I just let them be.
So I ended up with trio(2F and 1M).

And after he most likely eliminated the competition, he start working on the ladies. I see him chasing one or the other female all the time. I did not see any eggs or actual spawning. They were zipping under or through of thicket of the Moss.

Anyway, around 2 weeks ago while I was doing vacuuming and water change. I saw one fry in the bottom of pail with old water. I, of course turkey bastered him/her back to the tank. Thought about put in the fry tank or container if there are more than one. And I could not find the suitable container either at the time. I just kept my eye close to the tank. And few days later, I see 2 frys free swimming also see some fish sticks hanging on the surface here and there. And I actually saw one of the female munch on one of the fish stick also I see them try to catch the free swimmer also. So I set another tank, actually had few Corydoras frys in it but remove them to other tank. The point is it is not newly set tank. And catch the 3 adults and move them to the new tanks last week.

Since then the original tank they were in, I saw about 12 free swimmers last week. And I see more as time passed. Now I can’t count anymore. I think there are at least 30 or 40 maybe 50 swimming all over the place.
And I still see some fish stick hanging on some tank surface or the plants. So I think I will get few more.

So now I start to wonder that how long does it takes for them gain some color instead of clear looking frys.

I hope someone who grew out the CPD frys can answer my question.

congrats on the fry

my cpd babies are about half inch long now. they resemble the adults eith the dots and a tint of red on there fins but its know where near as deep as the adults is! they are about 4-5 months old now i believe

ive havent seen a aggresive cpd tbh! i have had about 4-5 in the same tank and didnt see any aggresion.

Thanks for the welcome. And that is a good tip. I should’ve looked around a bit before ask. :oops:
And Judging from the picture, I guess most of the frys are around week old. So I guess I need another 11 weeks to feel good about passed them to another hobbyist.

And hopefully, I see some more fish sticks on the 2nd tank in week or 2 and forced to find yet another tank for them. :wink:

welcome to the forum, and glad to hear about your early success! I found that adding each day’s new fry to a second tank worked for a little over a week. After that, the oldest fry were big enough to start snacking on the new free-swimmers (just past the “fish stick” stuck on the glass stage). Then I let a week’s worth of free-swimmers pile up in the breeding tank, and kept the adults full of micro-worms to encourage not hunting their young. After a couple weeks, the first batch was big enough to survive in a third (guppy) tank, which has become the final grow-out tank stage for my fry.

Good luck with raising the batch you’ve already got, and then more.

I think I just let the first tank alone and sort themselves out. And leave them there for a month or so and move them to another bigger tank. They can live with my young Corydoras. And I will clean the tank a little and get the parents back in there again. I think I probably rotate 3 small tanks where the parents can stop over 2 weeks each or so or when I notice the fish sticks hanging . I’ll move them to next tank. That is my plan for now and see how it goes.
Hopefully I have tons of frys in 2 month. Especially the big frys I can pass to other hobbyists. And some more fish sticks and all the frys of different sizes.

Today I decide to do some water change from the tank I have 3 CPD trio is in. This is the 2nd tank I put them in since the 1st one have enough free-swimmers and I know the adults sometime eat the small fish sticks.
Anyway, they have been in the 2nd tank for about 2 weeks now and I was wondering when I see the fish sticks on the tank surface. Although I have not see any, then again I missed it since the tank have black sands in it and I also put some glass marbles on top ot the sands to discourage the adults to eat the eggs and frys.
And I took out like 2 gallon with vaccum but without the hard plastic part so not to disturb too much. And I saw 2 fish sticks on the bottom of white pail. I guess I have some frys in the 2nd tank now.
I guess I should set the 3rd tank so I can move them soon before they try to eat their young.
I guess setting another small tank is not such a bad problem to have. Although I need to find the right size tank and spot to set it up.

Hopefully another 2~3 weeks(while the adults would be in the 3rd tank), the 1st batch in the first tank get big enough and I can move them to bigger tank(probably 20Long) that I have frys from the Corydoras are in and also have a cave that I think the Daddy Albino bristlenose is guarding eggs/frys at the moment.
Hopefully 3 small tanks is enough to rotate and move the adults around. And hopefully by January which should be over 12 weeks, I have some young CPD. Of course, I would offer them first to my aquarium society. But I already have one store told me that they would take whatever I have left. :wink:

Although there are no visible frys in the 2nd tank, I imagine there must be another 50 between eggs and fish sticks. And they should show up in a week. I just need to move the adults so they will not make the snack out of the future CPD. And I need to keep and grow them to be about 12 weeks. And hopefully I find them a good home and I get some fish money. So I can get more fish supply.

I’m assuming it’s the tiny fry at the stage they stick to the sides of the tank. They look like little ‘fish sticks’

“fish stick(s)” is the newly hatched frys which still barely able to move. Some people call them wigglers but I call them fish stick since they are fish but look like a stick.

“fish stick” — hadn’t heard it before NEONCORY used it, but great name!! The little sticks frozen to the walls of the tank between hatching and free swimming definitely aren’t “wigglers”! Like needles with bug eyes. Silly things don’t even blink. :wink:

I’m sure most people would picture the golden colored buttered rectangular deep fried food that comes with tarter sauce and mound of french frys(or chips) when they hear the “fish stick”.

But the tiny frys are fish and shape like stick. And they barely move. So I call them fish stick although I would not dip them in the tarter sauce. :lol:

They are too small to fill me up anyway.

Yeah well, just fry is bad enogh. I should have expected it, but when looking for baby fish pictures on google, “fish fry” doesn’t cut it.

Anyway, my vegetarian mind took a few moments to process the results. :roll:
