I just assembled a new tank consisting of 2 african dwarf frogs, 8 neon tetras, a baby calico fantail goldfish, two blue mystery snails (who have yet to open fully and move…) and 3 fancy guppies (1 very large tailed, very pregnant female and two males). All of the fish are fine except for my yellow “tattooed” male guppy. He won’t leave my faintail alone!!!! The poor thing is hiding in the shadows and he keeps chasing poor Nibbles. My female guppy should be giving birth within 5 days and I want the pretty yellow male to breed with her so I don’t want to take him out (sometimes he chases her too…) And I really like Nibbles in my tank. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!
July 2, 2007 at 10:45 am #11534CrazedpufferParticipantGoldfish aren’t tropical community fish at all. I’m surprised your goldfish hasn’t eaten the guppy yet.
Also chances are the female guppy won’t give birth to the yellow guppies babies anytime soon. They hold on to the same sperm for months and have multiple batches of babies from it.July 2, 2007 at 11:05 am #11535EllyParticipantThe goldfish is less than 2″. I know that female guppies can hold sperm for 6 months but right before and for a little while after they give birth they release a pharimone letting the males know that they are ready to mate. The new sperm is “used” as well as the old sperm. Both of my males and what ever other fish she has bred with can sire her next batch. I know gold fish aren’t tropical, but my tank is cold water, he is small, and since he is a fantail he is fairly slow moving so even if he was agressive the other fish would have a great chance at getting away because they all swim much faster than Nibbles. Like I said and need help with, my guppy is bullying my goldfish…
July 2, 2007 at 11:40 am #11536CrazedpufferParticipantI have a fantail goldfish too. Only about 2 inches. He had a swim bladder problem and couldn’t swim much so I put him in my 10 gallon guppy tank so he would be able to go to the surface for air. It helped him and he was swimming fine. I kept him in there for a few extra days to be safe and soon all my guppies were gone. The tank was full of guppies and I was down to about 4. Soon enough your goldfish will take a turn and eat your guppy if it keeps annoying him.
July 2, 2007 at 6:20 pm #11544EllyParticipantMy gupies and my goldfish are the same size. Did you have feeder (common) guppies or fancy guppies? My goldfish is smaller than 2″… Nibbles just swims under my filter and hides from the yellow male. He doesn’t fight back at all. I think I might just get more females. I took out the yellow male last night because I couldn’t stand to see Nibbles beaten up. I will put the female in with him after she gives birth.
July 2, 2007 at 8:23 pm #11545CrazedpufferParticipantYes I have fancy Guppies also the same size as my fan tail. It worked for a little more then a week before they got eaten. Also all the fish in the tank will eat babies. Do you have a seperate tank for the babies too?
July 3, 2007 at 7:07 am #11548EllyParticipantI have quite a few plants for them to hide in. The male has been removed from the tank and I plan to get a lot more plants tomorrow as well as a few more females to distract from Nibbles. I’m way more worried about the frogs eating the babies than the fish eating the babies. I have had it happen before. I also might pick up a breeding net/contraption to put the female into until she has her babies so that they will be safe from all. What is it called when a fish gives birth? When dogs give birth it is called whelping. Is there an equivilent term for fish? Do you know how to coax my mystery snails out of their shells? Pardon the pun… They still haven’t come out and explored.
July 3, 2007 at 12:42 pm #11551CrazedpufferParticipantMy tank had a lot of places to hide too. My goldfish could barely swim but it managed too. It will work for a limited time but eventually they will be gone. It’s your decision for your tank so I really can’t say much. Trust me everyone in the tank will eat the babies. If you have a lot of plants some will live but sadly most won’t make it. No clue how to get the snail out of the shell. How long have you had the snail? How was it aclimated?
July 3, 2007 at 6:49 pm #11554EllyParticipantThe snails finally came out. I really won’t be too upset if several babies get eaten. I know she will have more and I don’t know what the dads looked like.
July 4, 2007 at 6:56 am #11561EllyParticipantI got two more big plants in addition to my 4 grass plants and 4 more females. The one male (not the yellow) keeps floating head down and has a really swollen belly (I quarentined him). The yellow male is now attacking (literally nipping) the 5 females and Nibbles. The water in my tank keeps heating up during the day when I have my light on. They are two tube style 15 watt bulbs. Should I just unscrew one? Should I not turn the lamp on unless I am watching the fish? Will my fish do better in a warmer tank? (I bought them from a section called “heated tank fish”). Am I supposed to unpot my plants? And if I do, (I already did…) shoud I get off the excess “dirt” and plant the roots in my gravel?
July 4, 2007 at 11:18 am #11563CrazedpufferParticipantThat male sounds like he is sick. Do his scales look like they are popping off? If your yellow male is gettin that aggressive it might be best to remove him. How much does it heat up? All the fish in there do good in warm water also (with the exception of Nibbles) Do you have live plants? What kind? I wouldn’t unscrew the bulb. Keep the light on even when your not watching the fish. I keep my lights on for about 9 hours. Yes you should unpot plants and take off the excess dirt and put the roots into the gravel.
July 5, 2007 at 9:26 pm #11575EllyParticipantThe male’s tail is being eaten by all of the other guppies. The yellow male is no longer agressive; he just “dances” ALL THE TIME! He keeps closing up, backing up, and then opening up his fins fully to show off to a “female of the day”. Two of my females had babies so he got a chance to “let it out of his system”. I removed Nibbles and the two frogs for fear that they would eat my babies (I have lost all but one before to a dwarf frog…) and so Nibbles would 1) not be affected by the water temp, and 2) not get so fat. He’s been eating EVERYTHING he can and has plumped up quite a bit so this way I can monitor his eating habits a little better (I know from a bio project that goldfish can and will literally eat themselves to death). I have four grass plants (I don’t know what kind… Just the common Petco variety) a Lutea, and an Amazon sword.
July 6, 2007 at 11:14 am #11578CrazedpufferParticipantWhat are you feeding them? The fish should calm down and stop picking on the male soon enough but if it gets bad you might want to seperate him too. Glad to hear Nibbles and the frogs got a new home. Hope everything works out.
July 6, 2007 at 4:44 pm #11584EllyParticipantI am feeding them tetra min. They LOVE it!! Sadly, I had to flush the one male. He was in REALLY bad shape. Distended belly, floating on his side, being bitten by the others, less than half of a tail left. I’m glad he’s not hurting anymore… Plus I didn’t want him contaminating my tank if he had worms or something.
July 6, 2007 at 4:53 pm #11586CrazedpufferParticipantSorry about your loss. At least he’s in a better place now. Also what are your plans for Nibbles?
