Just wanted to share where I am with my breeding results.
I have a 10ltr small tank with a spong filter as a breeding tank. I used to make this clean every time I started a new breeding try. This is wrong. What I now have is a mature tank in the windowsill in which I see lots of small critters wondering around, also I see very small worms swimming. This means that there is lots of life in the tank. Back when I completely cleaned the tank I did not see this and therefore had big troubles raising the fry. How I do it now is perfect. THey have food all around. I leave them in the tank for 4 weeks ans sometimes add some small food after week 2. After 4 weeks I move them to the big tank.
I tried lots of things to get as many fry as possible. I used lots of moss (5-10 babies), a breeding trap (5-10), wool (5-10). What I use now is a Ministeck board and use a lot of moss I bind to the board. With a stone in the middle I make this sink. Good think about this is that it is at the bottom of the tank (it seems that my fish are afraid for the higher breeding trap and feel uncomfortable) but still has like 3mm room between the board and the bottom, SO eggs can fall in between.
I now get around 30 fry each time.
btw, I use 2 males, 3 females and put them in the tank for 6 days. I feed them brine shrimp twice a day while in the tank.

May 15, 2011 at 8:59 pm #14940LarsvbParticipantI am not sure as I remove the parents after 5-6 days and then wait. I leave the ministeck plate where it is so cannot really say if the eggs are in the moss or on the bottom. I will check in a future breeding attempt.

@MChambers
btw. as you can see on the video I have an exactly thesame setup and try to breed Emeralds in there. I just checked and see many eggs under the ministeck board so apparantly they fall trough.May 17, 2011 at 3:32 pm #14944MChambersParticipantThanks for the explanation.
Right now, I don’t really have the space to move the adults, but maybe I can figure out how to do that.

1. How do you keep the parents from trying to hide under the ministeck board?
2. How did you bind the moss to the board?
3. Where can I find a ministeck board, or is it just plastic canvas?
Thanks for any help man.
May 24, 2011 at 8:51 pm #14947LarsvbParticipantHi,
1 there is a small stone in the middle of the board between the moss that keeps the board down on the ground. The fish cannot lift it
2. I used small black rope that does not break when it gets wet.
3. I bought mine in the toyshop down the road. I am sure you can find some on ebay.May 25, 2011 at 7:25 am #14948LarsvbParticipantthis method works for Emeralds as well. I got 15 (and counting) in the first attempt.
