Woke up today to some fry in my shrimp only tank. Move my school of cpds out last week. First time with fry and would love to get a few survivors because I want to increase my school size.

Will the be safe with my shrimp?
Have a hob filter with a sponge on intake. Will that be safe ?
How should I feed? Specifically stuff I can buy in petsmart. Fed them egg yolk today
    Any other advice?

Hey grads on the fry, the best thing you can do right now is make a infosoria culture. Take a jar preferably glass fill with water from your shrimp tank, take a piece of lettuce about half the size of a dollar bill. Shred it up and put it in the jar, take a dime size amount of boiled egg yolk crush it up with a bit of water, pour that in the jar. Now place the jar by a window that will remain above 50+ degrees, along with good direct sunlight. I. About 4-5 days you should see clouds of tiny micro dots swimming near the surface. It helps if you have a magnifying glass if you have bad eye sight.
Take a small container , some airline and siphon some of the infosoria out into the container. Try to avoid the lettuce matters and stuff near the surface. Stop the filter in your shrimp tank and pour the infosoria in and watch your frys belly turn white and Blum. After a week on that I suggest getting hikari first bites I believe they have them at petsmarts.

It’s not the best way but it’s what you can get at petsmarts. I suggest ordering some micro worms off eBay, those are a lot better as 2nd food.

Here is a good video of what you should be looking for in your infusoria culture http://youtu.be/xeWEVIIV8CE
Just remember to feed little at a time and to turn ur filter back on after an hour or so.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new fry!

They should be fine. In fact, for several years I kept shrimp in most of my fry tanks. The shrimp are an excellent clean-up crew for the tiny food particles the fry do not eat.

That should work great. If it is fine enough that the baby shrimp are not getting pulled into the filter then it will work for the fry too.

The egg yoke is a great “old school” method for feeding fry. Just be careful not to add too much as it will quickly foul your water. Do you have moss and other plants in your shrimp tank? If so, the fry will find all kinds of micro-fauna to graze on there. As for PetSmart foods, I’d probably go with the best flake food that they carry and crush it into dust sized particles.

Best of luck with your new fry & keep us posted on your progress with them.

After two days looks like I have 12-15 swimming around. Is there a point to starting the culture now. By the time it will be ready they will be a week old. Been feeding tiny bits of hikari first bites. Also have lots of plants and moss but they seek to be hanging out in the upper portion of the tank. Do you think they are getting enough food? Don’t want them to starve. And doing extra water changes

I keep it between 75-80f I find that helps them grow faster, but I’ve had fry in water as cold as 60f and they were fine.

As long as the food is dust sized particles they should be able to eat it. When I feed prepared food to new fry, it’s the 5-50 micron sized golden pearls – it feels like baby powder in your fingers. Feeding newly hatched CPD fry is one of the hurdles to spawning them. The fry are so small they can be a challenge to feed. In about 10 days to two weeks they will be large enough to start eating newly hatched brine shrimp.

I try to keep my CPD’s in the high 60’s / low 70’s.

Babies are 11 days old. Seem to have more then doubled in size. Def look more like fish now. Seeing nice white bellies so know they are eating. Micro worm culture got lost in mail so feeding first bites. Pointless to order more cause by that time they should be eating bbs. Look to have 12 to 15

Good, just remember to do water changes every 2-3 days.
