I have just started my first breeding attempt. I have 3 females and 2 males in a 10 gallon with sponge filter, Dennis’ egg trap, and some additional java moss.
I just moved them this morning. I had a couple of other fish in the tank while it was cycling so they have been removed and I reset the heater to 66F. We’ll see how this goes. The tank is near the patio doors so it gets the first light in the morning and I don’t turn the aquarium lights on until it gets close to dark.
I’ll keep everyone posted!

February 12, 2011 at 9:28 pm #14802In2wishinParticipantAfter one day I am seeing what I think is spawning behavior. They are still hiding some but not as much as yesterday. I plan to keep them in the tank for a week, then move them back to the main tank. Does this seem like enough time?

That should be plenty of time.

Personally, I’ve never seen them, but I suspect it has a lot to do with your aquarium lighting and other conditions. I think if you do a search here, you’ll see descriptions of what you should be looking for.
February 22, 2011 at 4:11 pm #14817In2wishinParticipantWell, there was nothing. I kept them in the tank for a week and waited for a week. I think I had the conditions right for spawning but maybe they are still too young???? Any ideas?
February 23, 2011 at 2:39 am #14819BallAquaticsParticipantUntil you get used to what they look like, they can be very hard to see.
When using the egg trap, I usually remove the trap every couple of days and take the lid off to inspect for eggs. If you use a bright light from above and set the trap on a dark surface, it will help to see the eggs. They are very small and when first laid they are almost clear… very hard to see.
I have had several people tell me that they thought their CPD’s weren’t producing any eggs, but then they neglected the traps for several days and found fry when cleaning out the traps…
Are you feeding your adults any live foods?

I guess you could say that I am feeding them “almost live” foods. Decap BBS and freeze dries bloodworms in addition to their regular flake.

I just set-up some traps today and got this photo of some eggs. If you zoom in where the red ^^^^ are you can see the eggs.

There are lots of other eggs in the trap too, this was just an easy group to point out.

Wow, they are hard to see and you are showing us where to look for them. Can’t imagine seeing them without knowing what they look like. I somehow thought that they were white, not clear. Great picture Dennis, thanks for showing us what they look like!
March 10, 2011 at 10:48 am #14842snailParticipantThanks for sharing the pic, very helpful. Hope I’ll be looking for eggs before too long:).
March 16, 2011 at 3:19 am #14845In2wishinParticipantThose pictures were very helpful!
I am all set up again. This time I have the CPD’s back in the 10 gallon but I have more plants, moss, and guppy grass plus some cherry shrimp (couldn’t resist when I saw them). I will wait before I set up the egg trap again and see how these guys acclimate first. I think I may have just rushed it the first time. I know the shrimp and the CPD’d are known for eating each other’s babies but right now I just want them to feel at home.
March 24, 2011 at 11:24 pm #14858Tom2006ParticipantWOW…you have good eyes! Do you have any pictures of the spawning trap set up?

From what I have read from others experience the CPD eat shrimp babies but not the other way around. Interestingly I have a whole bunch of baby cherry shrimp growing up my CPD tank and they don’t seem to have eaten any, I think they just haven’t caught on yet.
