Hey all, I have notice one of my females is looking and acting a little odd. She seems to have scales under her chest that have slightly lifted and she has lost some colour. She hangs by herself alot of the time under the spray bar. Males still annoy her, she is by far still the fattest female. She doesn’t really go after food though, usually waits for it to come to her. Thinking it was a fungal thing I treated the tank with a meth blue and malachite green solution but she still looks the same. Dont want to lose her! She is in a 150L communal tank with zebra danios, harlequin rasbora, BN plecs and gold barbs, none of which chase anyone other than themselves.
    Last stats: Ammonia 0
    Nitrites 0
    Nitrates 10
    pH 6.5- 7 ( very stable)
Never checked harness but the other inhabitants require about the same and they all are thriving. I am at a total loss……

Hi Darth, welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about your female. The raised scales sound like a symptom of dropsy, but your water quality doesn’t support it.

Do you have a disproportionate ratio of males to females? Perhaps they are harassing her to the point of exhaustion.

As for hiding under the spray bar, perhaps this is the best cover she can find?

Sorry for not being more helpful.

I am afraid I can’t be much help either maybe with a picture but I know how hard it is to get pictures, the paleness definitely indicates stress, the females if they don’t release the eggs will get very large bellies. Most problems can be linked to water issues I would double your water changes for a couple of weeks and see if there is any improvements if for no other reason to eliminate a water issue. If you have more than 40 inches of fish you may want to thin the herd. Please keep us updated

Hey guys, thanx for the input. After a 30% water change and a big feed, she did start to look better. Unfortunately my girl gave up this morning, found her tangled in my whisteria. I’m devastated to say the least. She is only the 2nd fish I have lost in about 8 months of fish keeping. It had to be an endangered fish didn’t it…. When I pulled her out I noticed her scales were back to normal and she was getting her colour back. Don’t know what happened really, the others all look great. There was a higher male to female ratio and now it is one more in the males favour, thinking about ripping them out to put them in a heavily planted 120L on their own that a mate has. Just means I wont get to admire these wonderful fish everyday. :(

I have chased my tail so many times with meds, sometimes there are bacteria blooms and all sorts of fungi and algae that more frequent or larger water changes control and prevent. I now do 20-40% every 4-5 days, since I got my python syphon. Do you treat and or age your water?

Sounds like she may have injured herself and bacteria got in but it could just be natural causes. Increased water changes always help.

Hey guys and dolls, moved the remaining CPDs into a mate’s 120L planted last night, hopefully they will settle in nicely. Found 2 random fry hiding in my tank today!!!! Dont know but I think they are Celestials, going to put them into the other tank tonight. I cant believe with all the traffic in my tank that I seen them or that they survived…. Assuming of course they are CPD’s of course, we might have another successful breed soon! Sneaky little buggers

That’s great! They do breed like rabbits, the problem is, they are just too good at eating all the results!

I really wouldn’t read too much into the loss of your female. If you’ve only lost 2 fish in eight months it’s probably not something you could have done much to prevent. Perhaps she was just old?

Mine spawn at least once a week. My shoal is now 15 from the original five. For some reason only one fry from each spawn seems to survive the adults at the moment.
