do i need a filter in my breeding tank? I have a 5g planted grow out tank with about 10 fry and some baby pfr shrimp. (10g is currently being cycled for future grow out tank.)

would like to try another round of breeding but have not yet recieved the sponge filters in the mail. Can i just put fresh water and an airstone/mop into a bare bottom 10G to let them breed. after 2 days remove the adults. and do water changes say every 3 day sfor a week or two until the fry hatch and are big enough to move to the 5g tank? Will this work or is it best to wait for the sponge filters to arrive? If i do need a sponge can i use a new one or does it need to run in a tank for a few weeks first?

I have sponge filters in all my 5.5 gallon breeder set-ups. Even though I do massive daily water changes with the fry, I still feel better with a filter in the tank.

What percentage of water and how ofent do you change the water in the fry tank. I have been doing it every 5 days and more slowly keep appearing!

I like to do daily water changes on fry tanks. Just depends how many fry are in the tank as to what percentage, but it’s generally in the 70% – 90% range. To grow strong healthy fish they need great food and great water quality.

I will have to step it up.. I just did a 20-30% change tonight. did one maybe 3-4 days ago.

Theres 15-19 fry in my 5.5G tank with a few shrimp and its fairly heavily planted

So i have aquired an Aquaclear 70 (which is overkill for a 10 gallon) how ever it will hold tons of beinifical bacteria once seeded (currently piggy backing on a cycling grow out tank. I cut out the stopper in the motor cover to allow it to be turned down even lower. how ever it still has about double the output as an AQ20 on low. Will this be to much flow for a breeding/bare bottom fry tank? IF i was to put some filter sponge or something to difuse the output even more would this be okay? I plan on using a 10gallon bare bottom tank. I have another 10 gallon setup that will be a grow out tank.
