One of my Danios is swimming vertically! It looks healthy and gets around the tank but it waggles it tail really quickly rather than darting around the tank like a typical danio. It can’t swim very fast or very high up. What wrong with it!?
September 17, 2009 at 2:56 am #14109gedParticipantGood question I have noticed one of mine swimming like this, I isolated mine treated with melafix just in case it was an infection. It seems to be healthy except for the odd swimming. How large is the fish?
September 17, 2009 at 8:00 am #14110Tom2006Participanthmmmm….must be something to do with this species as some of my youngsters do exactly this and almost all end up dying. I wonder if they are missing out on something in their diet or its something wrong with a water parameter?

October 14, 2010 at 10:52 pm #14594Tom2006Participantsome of mine looked on deaths door only to pull through. I do wonder if it is some genetic weakness
October 16, 2010 at 12:29 am #14602AquaGirlParticipantIt sounds like some type of swim bladder disease. This could be caused by some type of bacterial or fungal disease. It can also be caused by constipation or because fish eat too fast.
It might indeed be a genetic factor for these fish, they might be predisposed to this condition. There is no single diagnostic condition that causes this but could be caused by any of the above.
Try feeding a shelled pea. This will help if the fish is constipated. I would also isolate the fish and treat it with something like MelaFix and PimaFix. This would cover bacterial and fungal infection. Unless it is treated in will eventually die.

Well i got same wierd swimming CPD’s. He’s 6 month old now, smaller then other’s CPD’s from same spawn, still swimming vertically but still alive and alwas hungry. So was thinkin that is genetic weakness potentially caused by some condition’s in breeding aq. So in mine r few factors i was suspect – low oxygen level (have only sponge with air stone), there was also hydra, maybee high water level (about 25 cm) or hard, tap water i use (forgot kh and gh). Was guessing that’s not bacterial or fungal diseas becose from 16 CDP’s from same spawn just one swimming vertically. And at the end i dunno what was wrong… Now with new spawn i put RO water, low water level, dont have hydra, have good filter in breeding aq and still one CPD swimming vertically….October 21, 2010 at 7:59 pm #14624AquaGirlParticipant@Dodode wrote:

Seems like you have tried all the right things. Sorry to hear that one is still not swimming right! I also use a sponge filter w/air stone and have no issues with keeping fish in these tanks. The dreaded hydra, hate it!
Genetics might indeed be a factor in these beautiful little fish. Since these fish are fairly new to the hobby there is not much information compiled yet.
Hopefully, because of this forum and others sharing their experiences and information we will all have a better understanding of these fish. I can’t begin to tell you how much I have learned at this forum already.
Cheers!October 22, 2010 at 10:00 am #14631DododeParticipantYup hydra is one ugly stuff. Well, not really ugly its beutifull but can hurt lil fishes. And also, like i said before few months, great forum with great people whos share expirience with this lil fishes. Also, i like it becose focus is in just one fish.
