If I can’t get what I’m looking for from a local club member, AquaBid is my next stop.

Thanks Dennis. One more question. After you’ve had your culture for 3 weeks, what do you do?

You start a new culture. I like to keep 3 cultures going at the same time. You have the one you are feeding from, one that will be ready to feed from in the near future, and one just as a spare. This way if one crashes you still have a working culture and a backup culture.

If you are serious about live foods, I highly recommend Mike Hellweg’s book…..

I’m really sorry for asking so many questions. I’m such a noob at live foods.

When you say start a new culture, does that mean to take some of the old culture and put it into the new one? Or buy a whole new culture?

Hey, that’s never a problem on this forum.

Exactly! At some point your culture will go bad. Before that happens, you take a small amount and “seed” a new culture.

I’m not kidding when I say you can really get into culturing live foods. At one time I had so much stuff going I was spending more time with my cultures than I was with my fish…. I would culture micro algae just to feed to my culture of moina!

    Ok. Thanks a ton Dennis.

When you seed a new culture, do you throw away the old culture?

Not usually. You want to get the new one started before the one you are using is not any good. With worm cultures, like micro, banana, or walter worms, it takes about a week before a new culture is producing enough to feed from.
