Well I think it will be a while before Galaxies are bred according to different ‘types’ persay, but I cannot help but notice that there is a lot of variation in the main color of the body of the galaxies. The males especially.
Some of the pictures of Galaxies I’ve seen, for example, the ones at the top of the page have a lot of blue, while others have an almost green tint. Others, like mine, are a pale gold.
My males also don’t have so much black on their fins. And it isn’t in stripes, but more of a spiral sort of shape.
I suppose these differences are due to regional differences from where the Galaxies were collected from.

Can’t say for sure though… it’s an interesting discussion, only time will tell if these are truly genetic variations. I hope this forum helps facilitate breeding for these different varieties, that would be so cool!
May 22, 2007 at 10:33 pm #11226madattiverParticipantthe colors of the fish brighten and get much sharper when spawning. mine when I got them weren’t very colorful, kind of pale looking.. no when spawning the males get quite dark and the red really comes out in their fins.
May 23, 2007 at 5:21 am #11227atlantis_childParticipantI did consider that the color differences might be due to the conditions of the tank, the food, spawning color and such.
And yet, I still hope that the differences may be genetic. After all, even organisms living in relatively small areas can possess different characteristics.
(And there are always freaks of nature )Mine were really quite pale when I first got them, and they were hiding and stuff. But now they go around like they own the place (which they do), and have brightened, yet are still a pale gold ( and with of course, those gorgeous gold spots)
Anyway, I guess time will tell.
May 23, 2007 at 6:08 am #11228zzyzxParticipantI’m also noticing that the males get a paler, gold stripe running down the top of their spine when spawning. (I think that rather than their spine turning gold, it’s just that the stripe becomes more noticeable because their sides turn blacker.)

I personally haven’t seen the red mouth in any others (hopefully his offspring will) is this common?July 8, 2009 at 4:15 pm #13984celestialdudeParticipantNope, never seen it…
July 8, 2009 at 10:31 pm #13985Tom2006Participantwow…stunning male Ged!!!
I think some of the colour variations seen on the net can also been put down to lighting and the camera used.
July 9, 2009 at 2:03 am #13993gedParticipantI found this is a picture when he was younger, but this angle it is hard to see the red bottom jaw, there is a spot dead centre of the upper as well
July 9, 2009 at 7:24 am #13998Tom2006ParticipantThe red is amazing!
July 9, 2009 at 4:32 pm #14002gedParticipantI agree I was so happy when he started breeding I am hoping his offspring aren’t so skittish, but I have to say he is a good dad he protects his territory so well he actually keeps the other fish from the eggs, eats his share no doubt and have seen him eating fry but keeps the others from getting too many I got 30 this week.
July 9, 2009 at 11:21 pm #14003Tom2006ParticipantThat a great haul of fry in a week!! What do you feed the youngsters on and where do you rear them? What is the tank set up? I ask because I’m sure mine were courting already this morning in and out of the moss. I don’t have a second tank available just yet. I’m in no rush but would love to breed and rear these lovely fish.
July 9, 2009 at 11:58 pm #14004gedParticipantI am now having a second hatch this week, I have 100+, there has been fry everyday this week.
I start them I this(8 gallon) I find it easier to feed the in this tank, the food tends to stay suspended and settle on the side. I used to hate that, now it serves a good purpose, there is a life lesson somewhere there.
I added more moss they feed on the small “bugs” that live on it, also I used frozen baby brine shrimp, also a staple fry food any staple you can grind fine enough will do.
I move them to this tank after a week or two a 10 gallon
I also added more moss to thisJuly 10, 2009 at 12:11 am #14005Tom2006ParticipantThanks…lovely tanks!!
Do you add a pair into your 8gallon and then remove them after the spawn then?
July 10, 2009 at 12:29 am #14006gedParticipantNo the adults 2 males 6 females are in this tank I have to remove them, the fry that is, not ideal I imagine it shocks them a bit, I maintain consistent water parameters in both. I am afraid moving the adults will stop the mating, but once I get a good stock I will set them up in a rectangular 50 I have and use a divider
