I have 20G Long for these little guys and i want to breed them, but how do i get the eggs once they bred?I want to have a successful batch that is untouched by the parents any ideas setups anyone have that they are successful with?

My idea was to take a type of net or plastic with bars very close to each other and place it about 2-3 inches above the ground so that the eggs and fry drop down to the bottom of the 20g and the adults cant get them, so its like splitting the tank horizontally.Thing it will work, but there are many many problems with this idea, food be will down there and i cant suck it out, I’m going to have live plants they cant be stuck down there, and how am i going to get the babies out without the adults getting in?

Maybe I’ll breed them in separate tanks like leave 2 females and 1 male in a 5.5 gallon for a day and then take them out and repeat?

Any ideas, thoughts? Also one off topic question I’m getting them tomorrow and my tank is not set up completely, what i mean is its not planted yet and has not substrate will they be fine like this for a week or so?

Thanks i know this forum is a little dead but i know there are still some people here!!Maybe a poll would be fun?

Separating them(Put them in 5.5 or so tank and take the parents out after 1 day, 2nd idea)
Splitting the tank horizontally(My first idea)
In the tank and take them out as i find them(just leave them and if i find some take them out)
    Other (Something else)

    hi

I think lots of people check in but few post. From my reading and accounts on here and my own experience. its best to separate them. i.e. let the adults spawn and then remove them.

Hi peixe, welcome to the site!

I’d have to agree with Tom. If you want to produce them in any quantity, then you want to separate them.

If you’re just interested in raising a few fry, you can keep them in a densely planted tank and now and then a fry will reach maturity.

Ok so separation is the best way to get fry, but how would i do it?
Would i just take 2 females and 1 male and put them in a 5.5 decently planted tank and take them out in 12 or 24 hours and take that substrate and put it in container and repeat?

    Thanks

This is how I set them up…

In a 5.5 gallon tank I place a sponge filter set to a slow bubble, a fist sized clump of java moss or 3 or 4 nylon spawning mops and 4 or 5 females with 2 males.

After 5 to 7 days, I move the fish to another tank. In the next 5 to 7 days you should see the results.

Since they produce a small quantity of eggs daily, I have found better success leaving them in the tank longer, (5 to 7 days).

    Best of luck!
