Hey guys,
I’ve got my mini breeding tanks set up and my sponge filters matured in my externals over the past few weeks.
I separated out 3 females from my 6 CPD’s and they are now residing in a small breeder tank with 2 red ramshorn snails a spawning mop and a small bit of java fern.
Over the next week or so I plan to try and feed them up and get them nice and fat.
I’ll update later with my new breeding setup.

Its a 12 litre (approx) plastic rectangular tank – it cost me less than £7. It has a really small heater and a air powered sponge filter in it. I bought 2 set ups as they were quite cheap. They sit alongside my 60 litre planted tank in my study.
The sponges from the filters are taken off and matured in the external filter which runs the 60 litre tank (eheim 2211).
Inside the tank is a spawning mop, as described in my initial set up thread and a few young small java ferns which I got during my main tank rescape. (the fish are in the right tank… a lot of spare plants and red ramshorm in the left.
Off to bed now guys… i’ll try some more shots another time.

December 23, 2007 at 6:40 pm #13206maximumbobParticipantinitally good. I got 40 eggs. Then it went bad.
I was using red ramshorn snails to keep the tank free of detritus, as recommended by another fish breeder.
I now know to my detriment, that ramshorn love to snack on danio eggs. All eaten overnight!
I’ll be repeating an attempt in the new year.
Older and wiser every day.

Ottos are fine with eggs though, right?

Simon, you are best waiting until the fry are freeswimming and eating before adding the snails, the theory behind it is that the snails pick at the uneaten food. I add mine about 1 day after the fry are freeswimming.Merry christmas everyone..
December 26, 2007 at 2:49 pm #13214maximumbobParticipantHurrah.. i have fry. I dont beleive it, but whilst I was away for christmas I return to fry in my breeder tank.
December 26, 2007 at 4:13 pm #13215ste12000ParticipantCongratulations simon, how many do you think you have?? They must have hatched and been hiding in the moss when you thought they were eaten.
Merry christmas, did you enjoy your time with the family? Did the kids enjoy themselves?December 28, 2007 at 6:44 pm #13218maximumbobParticipanti’ve been running around like a lunatic over christmas. I think I have around 10 fry, but I counted that in about 30 seconds and they are quite small.
I’ll try a proper head count tommorow and see what I have.
Ste – christmas was good. Its also my eldest sons Birthday on Boxing day, so it has been hectic to say the least. Kids are all partied out!
Anyway, must dash… need to sort out tea. I’ve got a new camera so I hope to pop on some more pics soon!!!!
December 29, 2007 at 9:53 am #13220ste12000ParticipantCongratulations mate, you might get that shoal for the big tank eventually!!!!

December 29, 2007 at 11:29 pm #13235chr15_8Participantwell done with the fry.
