A few days ago I got 12 CPD’s and added them to my 12g edge. They are in there with 4 neons and an apple snail (yellow shrimp are on their way).

    12G edge tank.

I love these guy so much that i have decided that i want to try and breed them.
I setup a second heavily planted tank (5G fluval chi courtsy of the GF)

I’m planning on using the chi as my “breeding tank” aka the love shack :)
Once it finish cycling i’m thinking of putting a female or two and a male into the tank for a day or two then transferring the parents back to the 12G.
Hopefully the eggs/fry can grow up in the 5G tank untill they are big enough to move back into the 12g

Will this plan work out for breeding? Its seems more cozy then a bare bottom tank.
Has anyone tried this with a fluval chi tank? I don’t think the filter is to strong but wil the fry be safe or should i try and elastic a sponge over the bottom of the filter.

    Thanks!

Hi shift, welcome to the forum! Sounds like a good plan to me. I’ve spawned lots of CPD’s in 5.5 gallon tanks with just a clump of moss. I would put something over the intake on the filter… CPD fry are tiny!!!

Best of luck with your project!

Sounds like a plan, I ordered a chunk of filter foam off the net today but will keep an eye out for one locally. – thanks BallAquatics.

Is there any easy way to tell when its the right time for breeding? Do they need to be a certain size? or should i just pick a few of the bigger ones?

From reading the forums it sounds like 2f/1m is a good ration.

You can generally tell when the females are in breeding condition as they will be rather full bodied with eggs. They can start spawning at around 10 to 12 weeks old.

I usually go with 3 or 4 females and a single male, but trios will work well too. Too many and the ones not spawning will be busy eating all the eggs.

    Thanks Denis,

    Ill try 2-3F/1M

I think it may boil down to who i can actually catch as the fulval edge can be tricky given the small opening and tress/plants/decorations in the way :)

How long do you leave your 3-4f/1M in the breeding tank for?

I have spotted 1 or 2 females that look like they have a bigger belly…. now i’m just waiting for the little tank to cycle.. hopefully sooner than later!
I have been using that liquid cycle from hageen along with a ton a live plants and a few good squeezes from the filter foam of the current tank.. so hopefully its almost there!

I normally leave them 5 to 7 days. If I don’t see any fry within about 10 days after removing the adults, I’ll try again.

I’m not sure if you have seen the fluval chi
    http://www.aquariumoddities.com/reviews/fluval-chi/

The filter sucks water from the bottom of that cube and waterfalls it back into the tank.. the filter isnt overly strong but do you think it would be okay for fry or should i try and add another layer of foam to act as a pre-filter sponge?

I can’t really advise on the fluval chi as I have no experience with them. I use air powered sponge filters in all my fry tanks.

We’ve had bits of plants get stuck to the filter but even when I had an ailing fish, the filter was never a problem. I’d guess your fry are gonna stick closer to the cover of the plants…

Excellent, thanks Tress29. I ordered some filter material off the net to build a pre-filter but if you havent had an issue i may not worry about it.
I’m going to do a water test tonight and if it goes well I will put a few females and a male in there for e a few days.. so hopefully they play the mating games :)

So i ended up with 3f/2m in the tank.. is there any issues there or should i remove one of the males?
