Has anyone tried breeding fancy guppies with feeder/wild guppies? I am very interested as to the outcome and I might try it myself…
July 4, 2007 at 11:09 am #11562CrazedpufferParticipantI have. Don’t remember exactly what they looked like, but I know they were some of my favorites.
July 4, 2007 at 5:40 pm #11565celestialdudeParticipantWild guppies are awesome! Their colors are more “real” and not so umm… loud. However I read somewhere that if you breed the purebreds with the wild ones, then you just get weird results…. but I think that was from a purebred breeder’s point of view. I say, go for it!
July 5, 2007 at 9:30 pm #11576EllyParticipantAre wild guppies and feeder guppies the same thing? I know that the look a lot alike…
July 6, 2007 at 5:56 am #11577celestialdudeParticipantYes, same thing, just like how dandelion can be either a weed or garden vegetable depending on how you look at things. If I had a garden I’d be growing lots of dandelion!
July 6, 2007 at 11:15 am #11579CrazedpufferParticipantCan they really? That’s so cool!
Back on topic some breeders use wild guppies to breed with there fancy tail guppies to increase the color of them and to increase there health.July 6, 2007 at 4:47 pm #11585EllyParticipantMy aunt who lives in Maine eats them like lettuce… (dandelions, not fish.) She also brews fiddle head fern tea… I think I am going to try a wild/fancy cross. I have had some BEAUTIFUL feeder males in the past!
July 7, 2007 at 3:50 am #11593celestialdudeParticipantYes I am a big fan of wild guppies. In Malaysia where I grew up you could find them in suburban storm drains. They are indeed very hardy and have interesting personalities, not to mention beautiful colors, even better than the purebreds in my opinion.
July 7, 2007 at 6:38 am #11596EllyParticipantI got two males from my LFS and they aren’t as pretty as some of the ones I have had in the past so I am going to keep my eyes peeled for some winners and replace the ones I got today. If not, I hope they carry the genes I want. (They were only 33ยข together so no big loss if I end up replacing them.) I discovered that my 9 baby fancy guppies belong to the half black female I have… I have a gorgeous yellow “tattooed” male (he’s not very big or larged finned but has stunning markings) and I’m hoping that some of his traits are present in her (and all of my females’) next batches. Does anyone know if half black is a dominant coloring over others? Or what colorings are dominant for guppies?
July 7, 2007 at 3:01 pm #11600ste12000ParticipantJust wondering!!, in the US what are feeder/wild guppies? In the UK we get the obvious fancy strains and also the endler species,

Are these the wild guppies that you are talking about? If so this is interesting because over here Endlers/wild guppies are a expensive fish to buy and fancy guppies are very very commonplace and very cheap.
Does the US suffer from poor quality mass produced fancy guppies like we do in the UK.July 7, 2007 at 3:19 pm #11601CrazedpufferParticipantI love Endlers. I don’t really see them much anymore around here though
Wild Guppies are not the same as Endlers though some do look a lot alike. We also do get lots of fancy guppies but they all seem good quality to me.July 7, 2007 at 5:41 pm #11606celestialdudeParticipantYeah, Endler’s look different from “wild guppies”.
Here are some photos from the Internet, of “wild guppies”:
If you do an image search for Endler’s you’ll see different patterns.
July 7, 2007 at 6:11 pm #11608EllyParticipantThey sell 10 for $2 over here. VERY cheep. That bottom one is gorgeous and looks like one I used to have! I hope I can find one similar! The fancy guppies in the LFS where I live all look a little poor quality. Most of them are probably culls from breeders or offspring from gupppies that have been in the tank too long and all crossbred. They are $2.33-$2.50 a piece.
July 7, 2007 at 9:23 pm #11610ste12000ParticipantA lot of UK guppies come from mass producers in singapore and the Czech republic. There are concerns over here that they are being criticaly inbred and are producing fish that do do stand upto traveling well and are not very disease resistant. I keep endlers myself as i prefer the more subtle colouration, i have never had any quality problems with these.
July 13, 2007 at 1:44 pm #11664atlantis_childParticipantI was recently readng a book by this Axelrod dude whose written lots on aquarium fish and breeding them and he said the result of breeding wild guppies and fancy guppies didn’t turm out good. They were really dull-colored and didn’t have the good qualities of each.
Mind you, the book was written a while a go and it might of been a diferent strain of guppies.
Slightly off-topic, I saw these “feeder” goldfish that were absolutely gorgeus. They were slim, comet looking ones, but a lovely silver color. I so have to get one for my 20 gallon. It was love at first sight!
