Blagdon are one of the most reliable airpumps around, from what you say about yours i would say the diaphram was either worn or broken, there is a service kit avalible and ill be servicing mine every year, upto now it is proving very reliable and very very quiet and powerful.
The stands are made with 2 1/2 x 3 planed Redwood it is screwed into position and corner braces are used on every join. It is very level and took the best part of a day to get right. It is untreated and will last at least 10 years, i did contemplate treating but most timber treatments are not fish safe and i didnt want the risk.
