Fry died!

    Hello Members,
    Iam thinking of what made my fry die.

    I have had 20 of free swimming young pearldanios.
    They were born in a 12 liters ( i think 3 Gallon?) tank, full of moos and plants. The tank is running for about a year now and has a little filter.

    The first week i did not feed them, cause i think they have found enough infusoria. They still grow. In the second week i started feeding 200µm “dust”flakes, at the end of week two i started with fresh artemia, and i started with water change.
    I changed about 1/3 to a 1/2 of the tankwater each three days slowly with a tiny air-hose(?). Every time before i changed water, i saw a few fry less. So i though “oh, water condition must be bad, i should do water change”. The surviving fry was moving less… At the end of week three i saw no more fry.

    Could it be, that i changed too much water???
    Iam sorry making such a f****** mistake, if thats what my fry killed.
    And iam sorry for my englisch, iam not a native speaker.

    How much waterchange is recommended for the fry?
    Other theory, could little worms?planaria be dangerous for free swimming fry?

    Hi Sven, welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your fry loss.

    Your description is basically how I raise my fry too. I feed green water, (infusoria), for about a week to 10 days then start them on micro worms & 5-50 micro golden pearls. After the second week or so, I start doing water changes and start feeding BBS. I keep aged water in storage and do large, (50% – 80%), water changes daily or every other day, it depends on how many fry are in the tank.

    Sounds like you did everything right… did you do any water testing to see what the parameters were?

    Also, I’ve kept fry in shrimp tanks where planaria were present without any problems.

    Hi Dennis,

    I did a nitrite test and its all good. No nitrite

    Hm i used fresh water. perhaps i should use water from my maintank after i made a waterchange in the maintank.

    Hi Sven,

    Welcome to the forum.
    Sorry to hear that you lost your fry!

    Did you test Nitrite or Nitrate.
    If your reading was for Nitrite and your reading was 0 it sounds like your tank is not cycled and you could have had an ammonia spike. Ammonia would be very toxic to your fry.

    Hello Aquagirl,

    Nitrite was zero,
    But i think/hope it was cycled. The tank was running for about a year still with a few baby guppys.

    For the future i will change the filter. Now its a tiny hangon filter and it seems to me, like its to powerless.
    I want to use a little air-lift spongefilter ( Do you say so?) .

    Hi, what do you mean by little filter? a sponge filter or a external one. I was lucky enough to get frys from my danios. They were kept in a litre tank with a sponge filter. But after a week or so they all died. I think the reason behind it was because i didn’t do enough water changes.
