Hello All,
Last week I spotted a splinter size fry at the front of my tank. Unfortunately, I was not able to catch it and I have not seen it since that first spotting.
At least I know that the problem was they way I set up their breeding tank. The fry appeared after I moved them into a 29G.
I have 4 pairs and will be moving a trio into a smaller breeding tank and will add Dennis’s breeding trap. Hopefully, I’ll get some viable fry this time.

Keep us posted… please.

Nothing much is going on and I haven’t seen the baby or any others since.
A friend of mine has a 20g long that has a divider down the middle of the tank. He puts the breeders on one side and then moves them to the other side after a few days. when the fry are a little older he moves the fry to their own tank and starts the process all over again. He has over 100 fry so far with this method.
He says that the advantage to this method is that you only move the adults to the other side of the tank and that this will help prevent the adults stress from possible differences in temperature, moving and water perimeters. He now has the adults breeding on both sides of the divider, lol. He removes any babies that he sees from the adult side over to the baby side.
Just thought I would share this and see if anyone has any comments on this method.

What does he use for divider? Glass or fine mesh? Cause I was thinking about using a mesh, but frys can get to adults part I think.

Hi There!
Sorry for the long delay in a reply.
It is a mesh tank divider sold in most pet stores. I didn’t have that much of a problem with the fry getting through to the other side but I did put tall plants along the mesh. Here is a link so that you can see what it looks like http://www.petco.com/product/112552/Penn-Plax-Aquarium-Tank-Divider.aspx
I used aquarium sealer to adhere it to the inside of the tank, otherwise there is space where the babies get can though.I am also using a glass baking dish with plastic mesh (bought at a craft store) on top. The baking dish had handles so the mesh stays on it really well. I put some moss in the middle with a small rock on either end to hold it down so the parents can’t get to the eggs.
It is a modified version of Dennis egg trap. I give the moss a gentle shake over the dish and then remove the mesh to siphon out the eggs every day. I has worked really well. I have had a few fry hatch in the tank so I guess I missed a few eggs. I have plants floating on top of the tank so the parents didn’t eat them.
Good luck and let us know how your breeding is going.
