I purchased 4 CPD’s to complement the 3 I already have for my 14 Gallon/54 liter aquarium, but they are very dull in color. You can clearly see the spots, but the general color is very light and the orange in the fins are very fade.
They are quite small yet, so I guess that this is because of their young age – or stress (or both).

Any feedback from the more experienced breeders?

    Thanks,

Hi rnootebos, welcome to the forum.

Young age along with substrate color, and the amount of cover can all have a dramatic effect on the color of CPD’s.

I often raise fry in bare-bottom tanks and the fish display the colors you are referring to. Once moved into tanks with dark brown to black substrate and plenty of live plant material they color up very quickly.

I believe that they try to mimic the color of the tank bottom to avoid predators from above.

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for that. These ‘young ones’ might indeed suffer from that. In my tank they have black substrate and a lot of plants so they should turn up nice. They still do not eat very well though…

    Regards,

    Richard
