Hi, i m new in cpds (actually i have nt any yet, but i m planning to ), so as i was searching the net for information about this magnificent fish, i found this forum and i thought “here i am! “
So I have couple questions to ask…
1) do you know what degrees of general hardness this fish require?
2) what is your opinion about keeping them in a community tank (heavily planted, including java moss and elodea) with guppies and swordtails? My tank is 66g (300 l) and i have 4 swordtails and about 15 guppies…Would they feel comfordable with these tankmates?February 4, 2010 at 10:26 am #14276Tom2006ParticipantHi and welcome
A great fish. They are very small though and very timid. They love planted tanks and can tolerate the usual general range of conditions as long as the temperature is not too hot or cold and the pH isn’t too high or low. Aim for 23-27C and a neutral pH and a medium to softer water.
I keep mine by themselves with some shrimp and catfish, and I know most people do. They would be fine with guppies and probably with swordtails but in a 66gallon tank you would need a big shoal to give them enough confidence to swim out and about. Could you invest in a smaller tank? Mine is 7Gallons and it perfect for keeping and breeding them.

Luckily, i do have an other tank, although it ll take enough time to be prepared, as there is no equipment on it ( it will take a while to save the money to purchase all that is needed  )!
I think i m gonna wait though for the other tank to be prepared so that they ll have the propper environment!
The second tank is 22g, what number of fish do you think would be suitable for this volume?February 4, 2010 at 12:20 pm #14278Tom2006ParticipantIt would probably be best just to settle them in. You could keep a very large shoal in a tank of that size. I have fifteen in my 7 gallon tank!!! Although I am moving some very soon to give them more space.
They will almost certainly breed so its up to you. My fifteen started as five and the rest have come from the odd young fish surviving the adults mouths. The adults LOVE to eat the eggs and fry. I would personally start from the group of 15-25 in a tank of 22 gallons. Well planted and they will breed and within 6-10 months your shoal could be double in size!!

Hi Marilena, welcome to the forum!
I use 20 gallon long tanks to raise my CPD fry in. You can easily keep 40 to 60 adults in a tank this size.
Best of luck with your new set-up.

February 7, 2010 at 3:50 pm #14281BallAquaticsParticipantThey are fairly easy to spawn, but rather difficult to produce fry in large quantities. I think this will keep the prices up for the foreseeable future.
Best of luck!
