I was cleaning out my 14g breeding experiment which I thought was not successful so that I can make it a new home for my cherry barbs and make my other planted tank a CPD/RCS only tank, but after I siphoned out most of the water I found some CPD fry. They can’t be more than a day old since most of them are sitting at the bottom, some swim. I know the ones at the bottom alive since when I put something beside them they wiggle away…. I had to catch most of them in the bucket that I use when cleaning my tank, I used a cup and for the most part a syringe, usually used for dosing, because most of them were on the bottom and still some managed to wiggle away.
Since my green water was unsuccessful I want to see if I can feed them some other food, but which one? I got some arctic copepods and daphnia flakes, some BS eggs.
I also put most of them in a plastic container with some moss and air stone.
After hours trying to catch some more in the bucket I just put all the water back into 14g. Water was getting very cold and I needed to protect them from my cat and dog. In the tank I do have one swimming and some on the bottom clinging to rocks, I’m also floating the plastic container with the rest of the fry in the tank. Please help I really want the little guys to survive! I was so excited to find some, and I think I might have killed quite a few when cleaning the tank.
Is it normal for some fry to be at the bottom? I did have 2 females and 1 male in there. I also noticed the difference between swimming and non swimming fry. Swimming ones are more clear and the ones at the bottom seem to be more darker, is there a reason for that?
Any advice/ suggestions are welcome. This is my first fry ever so I need a lot of help.
Thanks and sorry if it’s a little long

If you have adults in there they will eat most of the eggs and the wrigglers. IF you have LOADS of moss and floating plants then some often survive. I have around 8 in my tank from numerous spawnings that are still alive and have dodged the parents. I haven’t used green water, I found this to be good and eaten by the youn fish.
They do best in mature tanks with lots of plants.

I removed the parents, and discovered the fry while cleaning the tank. I tried to collect them but gave up and just put them back into a tank with an old water, the ones I caught and had them floating in the container ended up inside the tank as well, the container flipped over. I guess they ok in there I have a filter with a sponge attached, and lot’s of plants that now floating in a big bundle the at the top since they were supposed to be replanted but the whole rescaping will have to wait until these guys get a bit bigger, and the only tank mates they have at the moment is baby ramshorn. Thanks for the link to the food.
One last question
How fast do they grow?August 24, 2009 at 5:16 pm #14083Tom2006ParticipantThey grow quite quickly really. They should be around 1 – 1.5cm in about two months ish.
They will much prefer to be in their parent tank (Without the parents of course). Mine love the stuff I gave the link to. I also feed some BBS after a few weeks
August 25, 2009 at 1:44 am #14085funkyfishParticipantThat is pretty fast
I can’t wait for them to grow. And they are in the parents tank, without parents the only tank mates they do have is ramshorn snail babies.
The food you gave me a link I am not sure if they ship to US I need to find out if they do. But for now they do seem to eat arctic copepods and daphnia flake very finely crushed and I also soak it in a small cup before giving it to them. The tank has been running for a while as well so there should be something for them to eat, my snails thrive in there so there got to be somethingThanks again for the help and advice.

Will try to post some pictures soon.
I also been wondering how long should I wait before moving them in with their parents? Parent tank has 2 HOB filters and I am scared they might get sucked in….October 5, 2009 at 11:19 pm #14138Tom2006ParticipantNice one!! I’d give them a bit long, maybe another few weeks and then they should be fine.
October 6, 2009 at 12:30 am #14142funkyfishParticipantThanks
Cool, I will wait till they reach 10 weeks or so before moving them in with their parents. -
