I finally have fry. Approx 5-10…too small to count them all accurately.

The strange thing is my adults swim slowly right past the young (they are free swimming and about 2″ from the surface, clearly in the open) and ignore them. I thought the adults loved the snack on the young?

Mine do not ignore them for long, but I have heard of some people raising them together with the adults. Mine slowed the breeding down 20 last week only 3 fry this week so far I was getting approximately 40 a week last month.I have about all I can handle anyway I have about 120+. there are 60 4-6 week in a fifty us gallon, it is already a pretty good school. They seem less skittish than the adults.

excellent stuff Ged! I’ve got about three left so they must be getting picked off. I just have no where to put them until I can shift some discus in my 3′ tank.

Good idea…might try it out if I can’t shift my other fish currently in my tank. Out of interest, how do you go about getting the fry before they are eaten?

I use a shrimp net (really fine net) then use a dropper to siphon them out of the net, a test kit dropper will do if you cut the narrow tip off. I sometimes siphon with tubing sometimes.

I’ve never had good luck netting newborns, so I started using a small plastic cup. They never leave the water, and I get 100% survival rate.

that would work just to clarify I use the net to catch them, then siphon them and some water from the net
