Needlenose Gars Breeding at work!

When I saw a pair swimming against each other, I thought no way. Not in a pet store! But yes, before my eyes, an eye floated down to the bottom of the tank. They continued throughout the day, one egg every 20 minutes to an hour.

They are relatively big, really sticky, almost see-through, but slightly tinted yellow, and remarkably hard.

I took some out to a container with water from there, figuring a might be able to hatch them at home. My 5 gallon was empty, and I put a filter and heater to use. Put the 5 or 6 eggs in a breeder net to keep an easier eye on them, and prevent them being sucked into the filter.

Chances of them other eggs hatching them at work are really remote. Especially since there is also some kind of african catfish in there.

From what I’ve read they need real special care anyways. Live food practically after hatching (10 days). Brine shrimp, baby guppys and such.

I know there’s a good chance mine won’t hatch either, but I’m still hopeful. Just the fact that the gars would go through the motions at work is amazing. :wink:
