Hey everyone!
This is my first post and I’m very excited about trying to breed CPD.
I have been keeping fish since September 2007, and have successfully spawned livebearers so far.
I just got 6 CPD last week. Right now they are chilling out in a 10 gallon planted tank with 12 bee shrimps. I am interested in trying to breed them.
I was kind of confused as to which sex my CPDs were–I looked at the pdf file here and after a little observation, I’m very sure all of them are females as their anal fins are clear.
Just a couple of questions:
How many males should I get for my 6 females?
Do they breed in a group setting?
What foods should I feed them?I have lots of java moss and cover.
pH is 7.0-7.5, GH / KH is around 4-5 degrees. Thanks everyone. I will keep researching and take some pictures later on.

The water temperature is around 23-24 degrees celsius right now with a 50w submerisble heater. The ambient room temperature is around 18 degrees celsius.

Im new also. I have the same amount of cpds you have. I have 5 females and 1 male. I also have 23 to 24c on my temp. I think 1 male should be sufficient. Mines started breeding after I lowered the water level to simulate summer drought for a day or two and then added water to simulate rainfall and they started breeding. I noticed only a few frys at first but now I have over 35!! . Some a lil larger and some are still small with sack and clinging to the glass. as far as breeding in group setting I think they would. I had dwarf gouramis in the tank but I took them out soon as I saw the frys. I feed my adults a combo of flakes, freeze dried bloodworms, etc. The frys that are a lil older, I give them a drop of liquifry and baby brine shrimp. goodluckApril 5, 2008 at 1:09 am #13554dekstrParticipantHey bansart,
Thanks so much for the info! I will try to lower the water level for a couple of days, then raise it back up as you have instructed.
I think I will get some fry food and that 1 male CPD. He’d be the luckiest CPD in the region… 6 females to 1 male.
Just another question: The adults don’t eat their own eggs or young do they?
Thanks,
DexterApril 5, 2008 at 9:05 am #13559bansartParticipantNo problem. I think I read it in one of the threads here that they sometimes do or was it that they eat the fry? well.. personally I havent seen the eggs on mines so i couldnt say. I think if your tank is heavily planted then it should be alright. Plus you have java moss for the fry to hide in and Im sure the adults wouldnt seek the eggs to eat. I have observed that the adults dont really chase the fry or even try to eat them. I think the reason why they sometimes do is because the smaller frys are mistaken for mosquito larvae or planaria worms which I see them eat in my tank. lol The male your gonna get is one lucky cpd.. I call my male cpd rockstar! I see him darting from one female to the next.
April 7, 2008 at 2:09 am #13567dekstrParticipantThanks so much again bansart,
I’ll pick up a male CPD this week along with some fry food at the LFS.
I’ll see what happens then… if I see if I can get some fry. If there are and the adults are trying to snack on them, I can set up another grow out tank.
I’ll keep everyone updated, maybe start a photo journal.
April 7, 2008 at 11:36 am #13569dekstrParticipantAs promised I set up a new thread on the photo section here for some pictures I just took: http://www.celestialpearldanio.com/viewtopic.php?p=3306#3306

Those living with their parents tended to grow quicker for some reason but I also don’t know (if like livebearers) they eat the males and leave the females as all the fry were eventually placed together. Good luck though.
April 10, 2008 at 9:45 am #13580dekstrParticipantThat’s very interesting. I noticed the same thing when I had livebearers (platies and guppies) as well.
Guppies are very easy to sex from an early age. Almost all my fry turned out to be females. In fact, I would see some male fry in the first few weeks, but over time they would start to disappear and the females would dominate. I say the adults eat them, and the female fry tend to bully them.
I also feel that they are at a physical disadvantage with smaller body size and fancy tail fins that really hampers their quickness in dodging and getting food.
Anyway enough about guppies
I hope the adult CPDs won’t eat any fry, male or not. I will try both specific breeding tank and the current tank and see what happens.
April 10, 2008 at 2:55 pm #13581fishmodeParticipantdekstr, I am observing the same with my guppies, as well. Even though there is lush plant growth in the back of the tank, very little of the food flow into there. The male fry, I’m assuming, are being bullied all the way into the plants and have very little to eat as guppies tend to eat everything. So food is scarce and only recently have I noticed some very very small fry are hanging in the roots.
Eye-dropper with some finely crushed flake mixed with a little tank water is my ordeal now. Hopefully, some males survive.
