my room mates yellow zebra danio is ready to EXPLODE!!! no exaggeration here.. the thing is SO FAT that it’s scales are flared out..i’ve been keeping fish for long time and worked at petstores and NEVER seen anyting like thiss. i really can only use obscene words to describe but DAMN…
i’ll put it like this…you picture a fish’s scales like a flower bud..all together smooth but this one is like a flower open and each scale is sticking out…
anyone got any ideas???
this fish is swimming and eatting fine with all his pals…jus he’s a mess..
what should be done??scales flared out…sounds like dropsy. i just lost my big male Betta macrostoma to that. i also lost half of my wild caught Puntius denisonii(roseline sharks) to that as well. it only seems to happen to my expensive wild caught fish…
dropsy is a symptom of another underlying cause.. problem is, the cause can vary.

the fish is most certainlty at the ‘pine-cone’ stage…..hate to say it but should the fish just be put out of its misiery?? my lazy roommate won’t do any treatments for it…he’ll say and prob right cheaper just to buy another fish.thanks for the diagnosis
Sounds like the fish is too far gone, and probably in pain. It sucks, but I think i’d be better if the fish goes quickly.
Cut the head off and destroy the brain (they can still be feeling pain with the head off. Not sure I believe)
I’ve quickened fish deathes at home like this. One zebra danio got neon tetra disease. This has no known cure, will spread, and the fish will die for certain.
I have to ‘pull’ fish at work every few days when the fish is almost dead and looking real bad. It’s not as tough as with my own fish, but still hate doing it.
Only fish I can never bring myself to kill is a betta. I always help them by giving them some hotnwort to rest on near the surface so they can get air, and treat them like the others.
Getting closer back to the topic, I’ve only seen a fish with dropsy once. It was a Farlowella catfish/pleco (our supplier keeps alternating between the two :roll: )
It is a very long stick like fish, but this one looked like it had swallowed a marble, and yeah, the protruding scales. It was dead already, but showed my ‘apprentice’ the fish and explained about dropsy, since all we usually see is ich, sometimes fungus (mostly the bettas) and on occasion, bacterial infections.

ive lost about 9 cpd’s to dropsy
.i started to do water changes a while ago on my cpd tank since i havent had a single fry and about 7 have died due to dropsy.
i hardy ever done water changes on the tank before and i had a 40+ fry etc. and 2 loses (nothing to do with dropsy)
I lost some of my first wild CPDS to it. I think they are sensitive to temp changes when stressed.
By the way. When euthanasing a fish if possible I use clove oil to put it down. Its the fish equivalent of a lethal injection..

cutting off the head of your fish atlantis, whats up wit that? i guess you like to do dirty work huh?? freakn’ nasty..i was thinkng more of the lines of super cold water to shock the fish and it will just pass out or simply flush em.. i think cuttn’ heads is lil extreme…you could simply tap it on the head with a spoon and bingo bamo lights out…

Dunno, I’ve tried other methods, like smacking the head on something and stuff but it doesn’t always work. No need to cause pain, even in the last few moments of the fish’s life.
At least this way I know their pain gone in an instant.
And it’s not really that gross.
The clove oil sounds like it might be a better way though.

I think chopping their head off is more humane than cold water or flushing.
Cold water and flushing are not going to be a nice way to go. I certainly wouldn’t want my last moments to be swimming in sh*t.
Whilst nasty at first impression, severing the spine at the head of the fish provides the quicker kill.
Personally, I would rather my fish went to sleep and never woke up… I just got some clove oil from the pharmacist – its really cheap.
Yeah I agree with maximumbob.
That’s how I euthanize insects (i.e. pests) — just remove the head — but I guess it’s easier for insects since they have distinct necks…
But yeah the best way to go is a quick and painless overdose of anaesthetic.
Dropsy is also a sympton of mycanobacteriosis, which, like NTD, is incurrable. I would QT this fish immediately and treat for dropsy, but if it persists, and the dropsy does not go away, you might want to euthanize it.
I had a pearl danio for about 2 years, it was a female and died from the same symptoms. It seemed more like old age to me at the time because she was the biggest danio I had ever seen.
