I appologize if this has been posted, but did not see:

I think I am seeing a display from my male GR’s indicating a mating ritual? The males are circling the females and when the get in front of them they are shaking (aka getting jiggy), then repeating over and over. It appears if the males are trying to out do each other in displaying this to the females.

Am I just imagining things?? Anyone else see this type of display.

Yes, it is just like the guppy. The male does this in front of females.

The Celestial Pearl Danio, however, is not as flamboyant about this. It is almost a “hidden” dance, that happens very briefly. When this happens, the male “flares” his fins (opens them up fully) and you can see all the colors.

I’m not sure if I’ve imagined it, but I think the flaring of fins also happens when males are “fighting”. I haven’t observed mine long enough to be able to tell authoritatively… all these instances of fin-flaring seem to be very brief. It could be to avoid getting the attention of predators, since they are very visible when the fins are flared.

Anyone has any observations to share?

Mine will actually get really dark in the body and bright in the fins when courting.

The fins come out and if you sit still enough and pay attention long enough you will see a slight shimmering from the males.

Could be a lot of reasons, but most likely they just aren’t at the right point yet.

Like with humans I’d guess, just cuz their flirting doesn’t mean they want to have kids together…

    :)

Anyway, condition them with good food, the right habitat and so forth, then have patience.

My CPD’s did the mating dance for about 2-3 weeks before they actually started to spawn. Give them time.

For what it’s worth, now that mine have -started- to spawn, they seem to be spawning more or less every day now. Mine seem to be most active about 30 minutes after the hood light comes on in the morning, just before feeding time.
