4 foot tank fending for themselves

Postby jonfromhamilton » Tue Sep 09, 2014 7:55 am

I have noticed some CPD fry in my tank where I have one snail, about 10 shrimp and 8 adult CPD.
I bought a nursery net and they swam straight through the net.
I bought a satellite nursery tank and some are still in there and some have fallen back into the tank from the overflow.
They are about 4 or 5 days old I think about 3mm long but darting around in the water on their own.
they are not being targetted by the adults or shrimp so I don't fear for their safety but I am worried about their nutrition.
I have a big 4 foot tank with some java moss throughout the bottom but I dont know what to do about feeding them.
I have "first bites" but it floats on the surface and occasionally i see ab it drift part and be nipped at by the fry but in general they seem to lack any source of food.
is it possible they will get enough natural food from the java moss?
can you reccomend anything that I can get to sink near them that they may nibble on until they are big enough to swim to the surface?

thanks

Hi jonfromhamilton, welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your new fry.

I use the 5-50 micron size of golden pearls to feed newly hatched CPD's. You can also use the Sera micron food as it is like dust too. If you put them into a small tank, green water works wonderful as well.

Best of luck with your new fry!

from about 12 fry I now have 2 left.
I killed one in a net :S but the rest seem to be dying by thesmelves.
they are in a satellite tank fed by an air bubble pump so they are in clean water the same as the rest of the tank.
I have 8 fully grown CPDs in the tank and they are all fine, no disease.
I wonder why the fry are dying? I am leaning towards food, I can't think of any other reason.
Any ideas?

Hikari first bites
I have seen them approach it but I haven't seen them eat it.

I have one baby CPD from the first lot of fry left and it has started to opaque up.
today I noticed 3 new transparent babies darting around which is my third lot of fry so far.
at least I know the adults are health and happy.
I am considering giving some of the new fry to a guy who works down at the local aquarium and has more experience than I do and see if he can come up with something.

just about to go to an external filter (fluval 306) so i can put a proper guard on my filter intake in case that is murdering the babies.

looks like I will have to think of something to save them though because the adults will just keep producing more sprogs.

I'm not familiar with Hikari first bites, but I'm guessing that it's too big for them to eat. The prepared foods I feed to newborns is as fine as dust.
