Actually Eating?

Postby relaxedcrazyman » Sat Feb 15, 2014 12:17 pm

Good Morning,

I recently purchased 10 CPD for my 10g planted tank. I also bought Hikari Micro Pellets which I believe are 500 microns.

Now the CPD are super skittish in my tank, they always hide in this one corner i cant see them. They are with cherry shrimp and pond snails.

How can i tell if they are eating if i can never see them? Any other recommendations on food?

Thanks!

Hi relaxedcrazyman, welcome to the forum!

I feed mine sinking foods such as algae wafers, and shrimp pellets. If the shrimp are reproducing, they will eat all the baby shrimp they can find also. Providing lots of cover for them to hide in will often help to make them less shy.

so they will eat algae wafers? do you recommend a certain brand? should i drop it into the corner they hide in?

i am certainly hoping my shrimp start reproducing soon, hopefully some make it into adulthood to populate more food :)

there is a bunch of cover, lots of plants, but they always seem to congregate in the darkest corner and under an ornament i have.

is it safe to say that because i have a heavily planted tank, that they wont go hungry?
will they snack on the plant matter in the tank till i can figure out their food situation?
will they also pick on the hikari pellets?

since i cant get them to come out yet, i want to make sure they are at least eating something.

Thanks :)

I feed mine Hikari micro pellets from time to time. They don't seem to have a problem managing them, but they also won't pick them up once they touch the bottom (my CPDs won't touch anything once it settles onto the substrate).

I feed mine a varied diet; cyclopeeze, freeze dried brine shrimp, freeze dried tubifex worms, H. micro pellets, freeze dried daphnia, crushed freshwater flakes and crushed algae-based flakes. Whenever I come into the room or make a sudden movement, mine hide as well. I just have a seat in front of the tank and remain fairly still for 20-30 seconds and they come right back out. Then I add their food (sometimes even this movement makes a few dart back under cover) and sit still and watch. Mine never stay hidden long as long as I'm pretty still.

My CPDs tend to wait until the food has sunk almost to the bottom. Sometimes, if they're being enthusiastic, a particularly enterprising one will dart to the surface and nab some food. I personally feed once a day.

next question, also about their eating habits...

will they eat baby pond snails? my thought is no because of their smalls mouths, but i have no experience with them. but i am finding pond snail eggs everywhere and i am sure i will soon be overrun with them...
