Needlenose Gars Breeding at work!

Postby atlantis_child » Fri Jun 20, 2008 12:00 am

When I saw a pair swimming against each other, I thought no way. Not in a pet store! But yes, before my eyes, an eye floated down to the bottom of the tank. :D They continued throughout the day, one egg every 20 minutes to an hour.

They are relatively big, really sticky, almost see-through, but slightly tinted yellow, and remarkably hard.

I took some out to a container with water from there, figuring a might be able to hatch them at home. My 5 gallon was empty, and I put a filter and heater to use. Put the 5 or 6 eggs in a breeder net to keep an easier eye on them, and prevent them being sucked into the filter.

Chances of them other eggs hatching them at work are really remote. Especially since there is also some kind of african catfish in there.

From what I've read they need real special care anyways. Live food practically after hatching (10 days). Brine shrimp, baby guppys and such.

I know there's a good chance mine won't hatch either, but I'm still hopeful. Just the fact that the gars would go through the motions at work is amazing.

That's utterly awesome! Do you think you could post pictures of how they are currently in your 5 gallon? Seems to me you might have a bunch of hungry baby feeshies real soon.

Good luck!

I don't think I'll be able to take pic's quite yet. My camera is ridiculously bad at closeups.

I went away for the weekend, and coming back now I was shocked at how much they've grown. You had see the little fry in those clear eggs.

Well, not so much fry as little gars...

Except for the bug-out eggs and curve of the body to fit inside the eggs they look just like the adults! So cute!!! :D

Two squiggled around in their eggs for me after I gently picked out so white goo which probably wasn't fungus, but I didn't want to take the chance.

My dad was able to take some good pictures with his much better camera and camera skills. Will upload some, I promise.

The little guys died when I was away. :( One by one over a week. No blaming her, but my sister couldn't take care of them like they needed.

Most baby fishys aren't exactly easy to take care of.
